This as a result had proven to us that no matter the situation we find ourselves, we shouldn’t be complacent, for all is ephemeral. COVID-19 pandemic has been a threat, not only to the public health but also to individuals. From the onset, no one could imagine what the world is experiencing now. But to be frown, it’s a reality that change is constant which is accompanied by danger and opportunities.

If l may ask, how many decades have you spent on earth? Ohh…..Are you crucifying me for asking? I am asking just to analyse how novel COVID-19 is. An octogenarian testifies that he has never experience this kind of situation where more than 70% of the countries in the world would be in danger of a disease pandemic to the extent of lockdown.

If seldom the case, the present situation of COVID-19 pandemic is an eye opener for all. One could observe how the global economy is being affected. Government parastatals can’t work as well as those in private organizations. In fact, unemployment rate increases due to retrenchment or sack when companies find it difficult to pay salaries. But how do we expect people to survive, especially those with dependants? Of which salary is major source of income for many. Now, we need to be conscious of the situation because it is passing an important message of opportunities.

One thing l have realised is that despite COVID-19 lockdown, all businesses are affected except those of Telecommunications and other online services. Thus, one needs to optimize the ample opportunities that digitalization has provided. Have you thought digitalising your business?

The reason for this is not far fetch because any Internet based or online businesses require no physical contact or interaction. All activities are done online up to payment transaction. Could you imagine what was reported to have been the cause of students failure in just concluded West Africa Examination exercise?. Major factor is misuse of social media in 21st century by teenagers. It suffices to tag it ” Danger of social media to teenagers in 21st Century”. It was reported that students find it difficult to write correct spellings(addiction of chat shorthand) which by the way will definitely affects mechanical accuracy. Besides, they are fond of using mangled English(pidgin) for communication rather learning standard British English.

In addendum, Exam malpractices has been legalize to the extent that students believe links for expo can easily be founded through social media. I was opportune to partake in November, 2017 NECO marking of scripts. I noticed that large proportion of the candidates wrote answers…

…….. who teaches?

Ability to impart knowledge and to have positive influence in life of people are the major motive of teaching-learning processes. Educational system of these days gives little or no room to achieve the aforementioned goal. In primary level, teachers are trying possible best to bring out the best in young minds and to model what they intend to become while majority in secondary level shows nonchalant attitude towards this. Sometimes it is as a result of bad governance of neither positive reinforcement nor motivation coupled with incompetency in some teachers. Although, it is a great and challenging task at tertiary level for so-called lecturers to combine lecturing and researching. lecturer 2 Putting into consideration the academic slogan ” publish or perish ” which determines academic recognition and promotion locally and internationally have made it untoward for them to carry out the task.

At this juncture, we need to iron out this issue by let go of superfluous activities and create a focus route for students at tertiary institutions. Instead of lecturers playing pranks on student intelligence by delaying lectures towards the end of the semester, threatening students for payment of handout for continuous assessment, boy-cutting relevant topics of interest, laziness among others, there should be subdivision of lectures into two major groups ; Academic lecturers and Industrial lectures. Academic lecturers should be meant to teach effectively not just giving out courseware or materials to students. They should focus much on carrying out practical projects with students and thereby bringing out best in them other than rote learning and vague memorization. Industrial lecturers should be trained to conduct research with industry initiatives and funding. They should be able to communicate their research results to the world using pragmatic approach. Research papers is of no importance if we can’t feel the physical impact in the societies, though my opinion. In addendum, students under academic lectureship should carry out internship/SIWES/Industrial training (IT) with Industrial lecturers to understand what they learnt better in real-world situation.

In conclusion, teaching in any form is a task that requires, dedication and commitment. If you are one, try to make a landmark of continual benefits for coming generations. Teach, do not cheat ; Nurture, do not torture ; Lead, do not deal. Mind you, philosophy is life is similitude to law of Kalmar; what goes around, comes around.

Do you know Staid City?

Existence is an opportunity for all souls but a little appreciate this. All human are born equal but we are born into inequalities. Some are born with silver spoon while some are born in drainage system pathway, this is perceive as what has been ordained by Almighty. Nevertheless, diligence and moral decadence determine those that will succeed or achieve greatness irrespective of how they were born.

I was born in a community of elites in which education and exposure is not wanting. I used to wine and dine with learned ones and I learnt under their tutelage which broaden my scope of knowledge and also prepare me for life challenges.

I have being to different states in Nigeria. Among which are ; Kwara, Niger, Abuja, Zamfara, Sokoto, kebbi, katsina, kaduna, kano just to mention a few. My experiences in those states can never be compare with the staid city. Meanwhile, I learnt some lessons that are horrible and untoward.

Can you imagined a situation whereby you need to wake up as early as possible, around 3.00am or thereabout not only to meet up with the early arrival at place of work but also to circumvent the traffic jam? Have you experienced a scenarios whereby you find it difficult to eat three square meal despite you are financially buoyant but due to cumbersome workload at hand with little or no assistance? Can you cope in a circumstance that will not permit you to think of your future career other than working to get cash which can only cater for your food, clothes and shelter at average cost? All aforesaid interrogative expressions can only be answered with substantial points by those who stay in staid city.

Perhaps you think life is easy for those who live there. Life is quite miserable for the rich and the poor. Just that those with enriched pocket used large proportion of their income to live comfortably while those with epileptic income find it painstaking but favorable option(s) is of no avail.

Staid city is subsumed with heavily dense population which increases exponentially every blessed day. It possesses a landmass that is of small size with large portion filled with oceans and beaches. 75% of the available land is occupied by industries and commercial centers. This doesn’t pave way for much residential areas. Majority of the residents are using transport which increases the rate of traffic congestion especially during closing hour of the day.

You will wonder why we have such issues in the staid city?. The reason is not far fetch if one can carefully look into possible effect of a settlement with such features. Albeit, we have several bridges which suppose to ease movement but they are always busy and congested due to the effect of high population. Mind you, every member of other regional settlement in the country are contained in the staid city. In fact, it was once the capital city of the country.

This is an aphorism which goes thus : “Let me perch a while is the ruse that turns a parasite to be the homeowner”. That is what exactly led to permanent residency of some members of other state that visited the staid city for business or other purposes but surprisingly couldn’t go back home in the end.

Interestingly, all working class are paying tax either workers in private/public sectors or self employed. Even registration is imposed on all businesses in the city. We have several places of interest for relaxation and sociable events. If you are fortunate to mingle with wealthy people in the city, your life will never remain the same.

Cynically, it is a city of people who play pranks on one’s intelligent at the expense of proving how wise they are. This perception has been soo rampant to the extent that fighting, hooliganism, thuggery and other social vices are stains on white cloth of the city. They have escalated dubious attitudes, forgery, fraud and insincerity to other regional states. I witness and had several poignant experience of such act.

In a nutshell, life is good at staid city though it favors the rich but requires innovation , creativity, sociability, humbleness and industrious attitude for less privilege ones to survive.
